What the symbols on our site mean
- † marks a statement about how a nutrient supports normal body function. See section 1.
- * marks a customer review or testimonial. See section 8.
- ‡ marks something you should discuss with a healthcare provider. See sections 3 and 4.
1. FDA statement †
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
This is required by federal law on every dietary supplement, and it means what it says.
2. This is a supplement, not a medicine
Dietary supplements are regulated in the United States as a category of food, not as drugs. They do not go through the FDA approval process that a prescription or over-the-counter medicine goes through. No supplement, ours included, is approved by the FDA to treat any condition.
Nothing on this website is medical advice. Nothing on this website is a substitute for seeing a doctor, an optometrist, or an ophthalmologist. If something is wrong with your eyes or your health, see a professional.
3. Talk to your doctor before taking this if you ‡
- Take a blood thinner such as warfarin. There is a published case report of astaxanthin being associated with an increased anticoagulant effect. If you take any anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, ask your doctor before starting.
- Take blood pressure medication. Astaxanthin has been studied for effects on blood pressure. Combined with medication, the effect could stack.
- Take diabetes medication or anything else affecting blood sugar.
- Take any medication processed by the liver. Ask your pharmacist whether astaxanthin interacts with what you take.
- Have a hormone-sensitive condition.
- Are scheduled for surgery. Stop 2 weeks beforehand, as with most supplements.
This list is not exhaustive. If you take any prescription medication at all, the safe move is to ask.
4. Do not take this if you are ‡
- Pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. There is not enough safety data. Do not take it.
- Under 18. This product is formulated and dosed for adults.
- Allergic to algae or to carotenoids.
5. What to expect
- Take it with food containing fat. Astaxanthin is fat-soluble. On an empty stomach, much less of it is absorbed.
- Orange or reddish stool is possible and harmless. It is pigment passing through.
- A slight orange or tan tint to the skin is possible at high carotenoid intake over time. It is not harmful. But if you notice yellowing of the whites of your eyes, that is something different. Stop and see a doctor.
- Mild stomach upset happens to some people, usually when taken without food.
- Results are not immediate. The published studies on astaxanthin generally run four weeks and longer. Judge it over weeks, not days.
Stop taking it and contact a doctor if you have any reaction that concerns you.
6. Source and allergens
Our astaxanthin comes from Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater microalgae. It is not krill-derived and not shellfish-derived, so it carries no shellfish allergen risk.
The softgel shell contains gelatin. [ CONFIRM SOURCE, BOVINE OR FISH, BEFORE PUBLISHING ]
Full ingredients are listed on the product page and on the pouch.
7. What this product does not do
To be explicit, because others in this category are not:
- It does not cure or treat dry eye disease
- It does not cure or treat any eye condition
- It does not replace prescription eye drops, punctal plugs, or any treatment your doctor has given you
- It does not replace an eye exam
- It does not repair damaged vision or reverse an existing diagnosis
- It does not treat, prevent, or cure any disease
- It is not a replacement for sunscreen
If anything else on this site reads to you as claiming otherwise, this page governs.
8. Reviews and testimonials *
Any customer review, testimonial, or before-and-after shown on this site reflects the experience of that individual. Individual results vary and are not typical. A person's outcome depends on their health, their diet, their medication, how consistently they take the product, and factors none of us control. No review should be read as a promise of what you will experience.
9. Research we cite
Where we cite published research, we link to the source so you can read it yourself. Citing a study is not a claim that our product produces the same result as the study. The researchers have no association with us and have not endorsed us.
10. Proposition 65
[ PENDING. Determine from the finished-product heavy metals certificate of analysis before publishing. If a listed substance is present above the safe harbour level, a warning is required for sales into California. ]
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, KLOD, operated by Ryan Casimiro, is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of this product or reliance on information on this website. Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for the product.
We assume no responsibility for adverse effects resulting from use contrary to the directions on the pouch, failure to consult a healthcare provider where this page advises it, or use by individuals with undisclosed conditions or medications.
Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations, so they may not apply to you.
